Portimão
Portimão is the most populous city in the Algarve, sitting at the mouth of the Arade River, about 2km from the Atlantic coast. A city since 1924, it has a long history of fishing and canning, now reinvented as a tourist destination centred on Praia da Rocha — one of Portugal's most photographed beaches, with dramatic golden cliffs and rock formations right by the water.
Across the Arade River lies Ferragudo, a fishing village of colourful houses and a much quieter feel. Portimão's marina, near the city centre, has restaurants, boat trips and direct access to the river and the sea.
