Lagos
Lagos is one of the best-preserved historic cities in the Algarve, with a walled pedestrian centre where narrow streets are lined with wrought-iron balconies and interior courtyards. The city opens onto the sea through a series of cliffs and coves with crystal-clear water that have made it one of Portugal's most sought-after beach destinations.
Ponta da Piedade, just minutes from the centre, is the region's postcard image: golden cliffs carved into arches and grottoes, visitable on foot from the viewpoints or by kayak and boat. Lagos Marina, next to the old town, has 460 berths, restaurants and organised boat trips.
