Alcobaça
Alcobaça is a charming city in central Portugal, best known for the Monastery of Alcobaça — a masterpiece of Cistercian Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989. Founded in 1153 by Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, the monastery houses the famous tombs of D. Pedro and Inês de Castro, one of Europe's most tragic love stories.
Beyond its monumental heritage, Alcobaça is celebrated for its conventual pastry tradition, born in the monastery kitchens centuries ago. The city is also the starting point for the Rota dos Mosteiros (Monastery Route), connecting Alcobaça, Batalha and Tomar — three UNESCO monasteries within an hour's drive.
