Nazaré is one of the most iconic villages on the Portuguese coast. World-renowned for the giant waves at Praia do Norte — which reach over 30 metres and attract the world's best surfers — Nazaré combines fishing tradition with a vibrant beach atmosphere.

The village is divided into two areas: the lower part, by the beach, with the seafront promenade, restaurants and shops; and the Sítio da Nazaré, atop the cliff, accessible by funicular, with panoramic views over the bay and the ocean.

For beach and swimming, from June to September. To see the giant waves, from October to March. Nazaré has charm all year round — off-season it is quieter and prices are more affordable.

🚗 How to get to Nazaré from Lisbon?
By car via the A8, it takes about 1h15. By bus (Rede Expressos), there are direct connections several times a day taking approximately 1h45. There is no direct rail connection.

Yes. Praia da Nazaré (the village beach) is lifeguarded during summer and has protected bathing areas. Praia do Norte is NOT recommended for swimming. For families with children, the village beach and the nearby São Martinho do Porto (with its sheltered bay) are the best options.
