Peniche
Peniche is a rocky peninsula jutting out into the Atlantic, creating a unique geography that has made it the surf capital of Portugal. Supertubos beach, with its perfect barrel waves, hosts a WSL Championship Tour stop every year, attracting the world's best surfers.
But Peniche is much more than surfing. Its fishing port is one of the most active in the country, and the peninsula is the departure point for the Berlengas islands — a UNESCO-classified Nature Reserve with crystal-clear waters and extraordinary marine biodiversity. The Peniche Fortress, which served as a political prison during the Estado Novo, is now a museum preserving the memory of the Portuguese resistance.
Experiences in Peniche
- Surfing at Supertubos — Europe's most famous barrel wave, with surf schools for all levels along the peninsula
- Berlengas Islands — boat crossing to the Nature Reserve, with snorkelling in sea caves and a trail to the Fort of São João Baptista
- Peniche Fortress — 16th-century fortress with a resistance museum and panoramic ocean views
- Fishing port and fish auction — watch the boats arrive and the fresh fish auction at the Peniche market, an authentic experience
- Baleal coastal trail — cliff walk between Baleal and Consolação, with dramatic Atlantic scenery
- Bobbin lace — Peniche's centuries-old traditional craft, on display at the Lace Museum and in local workshops
💡 Local tip: If you're coming for the surf, know that Peniche works with almost any swell — when Supertubos is too big, Baleal beach (north side) offers more sheltered waves. And at Consolação (south side) there are longer waves, ideal for longboarding. Peniche rarely goes flat.
Where to stay in Peniche
Peniche offers accommodation for every style: from sea-view apartments in the town centre to beachfront houses at Baleal, the most popular area for surfers. For families, there are villas with pools in the surroundings, just minutes from several beaches.
In high season (July-August), prices range from 50 to 150 euros per night. Off-season, excellent accommodation can be found between 40 and 60 euros per night — and the surf is often better in autumn.
