Caldas da Rainha
Caldas da Rainha is a city with a character all its own in the heart of Portugal's Silver Coast. Founded in the 15th century by Queen Leonor, who commissioned the Thermal Hospital — one of the oldest continuously operating in the world — the city grew around its healing waters and became a hub of creativity and tradition.
The great artistic legacy of Caldas comes from Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, a 19th-century ceramicist and caricaturist who established his factory here. His satirical and naturalistic pieces — including the famous Ze Povinho figure — are icons of Portuguese culture. Today, the city remains a ceramics centre with dozens of workshops and the remarkable Ceramics Museum.
